The nature of the malfunction here is that motorists may be unable to stop the cruise control function once it’s engaged. Fiat Chrysler plans to fix the defect with a software update and will soon begin notifying owners to bring their vehicles into dealerships for the repair. But until that time, the automaker is warning drivers to stop using cruise control immediately. If you find that you are unable to turn off cruise control once it’s on, Fiat Chrysler says you can bring your vehicle to a stop by shifting it into neutral and braking. Then you’ll need to put it in park to turn off the cruise control for good. Thankfully, no accidents have been reported stemming from this cruise control defect. But as 36 million Americans hit the road for the unofficial start to summer this weekend, this is one recall that you should pay attention to. Even if you’re not behind the wheel of an affected vehicle, someone else on the road behind you may be!
